2016 marks the 100th anniversary since the birth of the world’s number one storyteller, Roald Dahl, and aqua shard are delighted to be paying tribute as the official afternoon tea partner.
Throughout 2016 celebrations will be had to honour the worlds cherished storyteller Roald Dahl; the man who gave us such unforgettable tales including The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Twits and Fantastic Mr. Fox. As part of the celebrations, executive Chef Dale Osborne and Head Chef Pip Sandrey at aqua shard have created a menu that captures his ‘pure imagination’ and explores his fascination with food. The captivating creations will bewitch and enchant all lovers of “a little nonsense” and bring his magical stories to life. To view the full menu click here.
The playful afternoon tea menu is presented in a book, a book you can then nibble on and eat. Each element of the tea, which is served within Charlie’s Great Glass Elevator, allows you to reminisce and revel in childhood nostalgia.
“Watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.”
Both savoury and sweet items all take inspiration from some of Roald Dahl’s most beloved books, all served on bespoke crockery depicting Quentin Blake’s famous illustrations. Mr Twit’s very own bird pie from the famous story is encased in buttery puff pastry complete with ‘birds’ legs’ poking out of the top. Sophie and The BFG’s quest to Buckingham Palace is brought to life in a ‘breakfast’ sandwich with fried eggs and bacon in between colourful tomato bread fingers - a little taster of the never-ending breakfast The BFG is treated to during his visit.
From 4th July, all guests of aqua shard will be transported into the world of Roald Dahl’s books, with a colourful, transparent installation adorning the triple-storey atrium windows in the afternoon tea and bar area.
“You can see right across the capital and it was fun trying to spot certain landmarks”
Afternoon tea which will run from 4th July and 30th September on level 32 of The Shard, served Monday to Friday between 1-5pm. Tea will be priced at £45 per person, or £58 with a glass of Yellow Label Veuve Clicquot Champagne.
