NEW DEVELOPMENTS SHAPE THE FUTURE OF LONDON BRIDGE
London Bridge is one of the most exciting and fastest growing districts in the Capital, with five flagship developments coming to life over the next four years. These developments will firmly place London Bridge on the map as an innovative art, culture, business and retail hub.
The Science Gallery London, which is due to be completed in 2016, will include 2,000 sq m of public space alongside a restored Georgian courtyard, on a key site at the corner of Great Maze Pond and St Thomas Street opposite The Shard and at the heart of the vibrant and rapidly developing London Bridge area. It will include exhibition galleries, a theatre, event and informal meeting spaces and a café. A flagship project for culture at King’s College London, it will engage over 250,000 visitors per year in cutting edge research in science, the arts and design, bringing together research, students, local communities and artists in new and innovative ways to stimulate fresh thinking.
Guy’s Hospital is undertaking a £160m upgrade project to create a new, state-of-the-art Cancer Centre. Patients at the world-class facility will benefit from cutting-edge research and the latest technologies, offering the highest quality cancer care. The project is due to be completed in 2016.
Fielden House is the third phase in the development of London Bridge Quarter. This project will comprise of a 180,000 sq ft 26-storey residential building containing 148 apartments, a new public space, extensive landscaping and retail space to be completed in 2018. The project has been designed by Renzo Piano and completes his trilogy of landmarks within London Bridge Quarter.
The London Bridge Station redevelopment will transform the station into a word-class transport hub capable of handling 75 million passengers a year. The development represents the single largest project Network Rail has ever undertaken and when complete, visitors to the station will benefit from a new modern concourse – the largest in the UK – along with 70,000 sq ft of retail space, more frequent services and improved connections to an increased portfolio of destinations with trains running every two to three minutes in each direction through central London at peak times.
Finally, retail specialist Meyer Bergman, the owner of The Burlington Arcade, has acquired the site of wine merchants Vinopolis, located within The Shard’s neighbouring Borough Market. The plan to create a new boutique fashion retail destination over 193,000 sq ft. The site includes the purchase of the Vinopolis building as well as a portion of the surrounding land and buildings including Thames House.
