THE SHARD SUPPORTS WWF’S 2019 EARTH HOUR
On Saturday 30 March 2019 at 8.30pm The Shard will switch off the lights in the spire for one hour in support WWF’s Earth Hour.
Earth Hour is the World Wide Fund for Nature's (WWF) biggest movement to protect the planet. At 8:30pm on Saturday 30th March, hundreds of millions of people across the world will turn off their lights for one hour to show their commitment to protecting our planet. Last year, in the UK alone over 10 million people and 400 landmarks took part, including Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and The Shard.
Starting as a symbolic lights out event in Sydney in 2007, Earth hour is now the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring millions of people to take action for our planet and nature. Research has shown that one third of us feel powerless about environmental issues. However, Earth Hour proves that together we can make a difference.
This year, Earth Hour are asking you to add your voice for Earth Hour: they want everyone to pledge to change one thing in their lives that will help protect the planet. It could be a promise that you make as an organisation, or one that you encourage employees to make both at home and at work. You could change the way you eat, ditch plastic, plan a staycation instead of flying abroad, or turn your washing to 30 degrees. It might seem like something small, but big impacts start with small steps.
In addition to switching off the spire lighting, office occupiers within The Shard have been invited to take part. You can get involved too by turning off all non-essential lights between 8:30 and 9:30pm on Saturday 30th March. Register on the Earth Hour website here.
