SIMON LYONS: B-STREET DELI

Meet the Locals

The man behind Bermondsey's favourite deli, Simon Lyons takes about his time in London Bridge, how his business has thrived and his hidden gems in the local area.

How long have you worked in London Bridge?

I’ve been at No. 88 Bermondsey Street for 12 years now. I fell in love with the area immediately with its quirky historical buildings and friendly locals, there is no other place I would want to work.

What is the ethos behind B Street Deli?

We pride ourselves in supplying great quality products to an ever increasing residential
and business community. Constantly adding fresh new concepts and listening to what folk want. Our mission is simple; to create a great environment and serving the local community.

What makes B Street Deli stand out from all the other food businesses?

Passion, innovation, atmosphere, team work and drive. In fact you'll see a lot of interesting and innovative companies moving into the area. It's a mindset that we all share which brings us all to this area. Bermondsey 167 is a fabulous boutique shop, full of exquisite fashion delights with pieces supplied from all over the world. José is a gastronomic Spanish jewel. And at Alex Monroe on Snowsfields you'll find a uniquely fabulous jewellery boutique, studio and showroom.

Why did you choose London Bridge over other parts of London to start your business?

A genuine love of the area and it’s ever changing landscape. We've had huge support from the local community and other local businesses. We are now one of The Shard's preferred caterers, and we aim to expand our bespoke catering services to other new and existing businesses. It was a great move for us and if I could do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing.

Describe the characters you might find walking down Bermondsey Street?

An eclectic mix of residents, food lovers, office workers and tourists. There is something here for everyone.

What is your best seller?

Too many to mention, our new salt beef sandwiches are flying out the door, as are our gluten free salted caramel and chocolate brownies. Our evening cheese and charcuterie platters are supremely popular.

To someone visiting the area, what are the must do’s?

Top of the list is to visit my deli where you'll always find a warm welcome! You should then have a mooch around Maltby Street, Borough Market and finish off the day with a river stroll to take in some of our infamous SE1 landscapes.
