SHARD SHORTLISTED FOR RIBA STIRLING PRIZE
The Shard has been named among the six buildings on the shortlist for the 2014 RIBA Stirling Prize, with judges praising it as “a thing of great beauty”.
Judges for the prize, RIBA’s highest accolade, went on to say that The Shard’s architects “have added immeasurably to its immediate environs and to London as a whole”.
Their summary of the building concludes: “If one looks through the gap between Big Ben and Portcullis House, a view subject to challenge in a recent Public Inquiry, the Shard appears next to the spires of the Palace of Westminster with the inevitability of an established and historic part of London's skyline.”
Discussing the nomination on Radio 4's Today Programme, Julia Barfield of RIBA said: “My perception is that most people love it … personally I think it is a very beautiful addition to the skyline.”
Also on the shortlist for the Stirling Prize, the winner of which will be announced on October 16, are the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool; the Library of Birmingham; the London Aquatics Centre; the London School of Economics Saw Swee Hock Student Centre; and the Manchester School of Art.
