The Shard Lights Up Blue in Celebration of the NHS 75th Anniversary

Shard Lights, NHS

On this day in 1948, The NHS was established as the first universal health system to be free at the point of delivery for everyone to access. Over the past 75 years, it has changed and evolved significantly as it continues to provide world-class health care for all.

To mark this special anniversary, The Shard will join buildings and landmarks across the UK in lighting up blue. Londoners will be able to look up as the lights reach their brightest at 9:30pm and see the spire of Western Europe's tallest building glowing blue for the NHS through the night.

The Shard recognises the selfless dedication and unwavering commitment of all the NHS staff who have tirelessly served communities since its foundation.

The transformation of The Shard spire lights into a beacon of blue is intended to pay tribute to the vital role played by the NHS in safeguarding the health and wellbeing of our nation over generations.

This latest tribute follows The Shard previously lighting up NHS blue in 2020 as a thank you and symbol of solidarity with those who were working hard to keep Londoners and the rest of the UK safe during the pandemic.

If you catch a glimpse of The Shard this evening, we encourage you to capture and share a photo on social media to support the tribute campaign by using the hashtags; #LightUpBlue and #NHS75.
