The Shard will be bringing to life the nation’s favourite Christmas carol by illuminating the capital with a festive light display from its iconic Spire, inspired by the much-loved Christmas songs.
Renowned choirmaster and broadcaster Gareth Malone OBE is set to lead an extraordinary carol performance to launch the festive season in style at The Shard, London’s tallest building.
On 14th November, Malone, known for his passion for choral music and uplifting performances, will conduct a six-person choir in a rendition of We Wish You a Merry Christmas from the building’s exposed spire, 78 floors up and 867 feet above sea level. This marks what is believed to be the highest carol recital ever performed on a building.
Since their debut, The Shard Lights have captivated Londoners and visitors alike, becoming an iconic part of the city's festive season and a symbol of celebration for various significant events. Each year, The Shard's spire lights up the skyline, casting a dazzling array of colours and patterns that can be seen for miles around.
In 2024, we are thrilled to elevate this beloved tradition by integrating it with Choir in the Spire, a special event featuring performances by choirs from across London under the direction of renowned choirmaster Gareth Malone. This unique collaboration will transform The Shard into a harmonious fusion of light and sound.
My conducting will inspire an intricate light show, and as we sing the lights will be seen all over London. Performing with my hand-picked choir on top of The Shard is definitely one of the most memorable performances of my life.
