BOROUGH MARKET CELEBRATES 1,000TH BIRTHDAY
The Shard’s neighbour Borough Market begins its 1,000th birthday celebrations with a series of special events across the next 12 months.
Borough Market celebrated the start of its 1,000th-year birthday celebrations with festivities that kicked off on Saturday 20 September, when thousands of shoppers took part in a colourful event entitled Footsteps in Time. In true flamboyant Borough style, paint troughs were set up at key spots in the market and people of all ages were invited to leave a trail of footsteps to make their mark on Borough’s history.
Donald Hyslop, the Chair of the Trustees of Borough Market, said of the coming year, “Rather than the celebration of a single historic event, the millennium festivities that will punctuate the next 12 months will be used to reflect more broadly on the past, celebrate Borough Market’s current status and explore the possibilities for its future. We have to be aware of our history, our tradition, our heritage, but our role is very much about where we’re going to go in the next 20, 30, 100 years.”
The Market will continue to stamp its footprint across the year, featuring a host of events in collaboration with leading figures from food and education sectors. Highlights to look out for include guest speakers talking to the public about the future of food and the role markets can play in society, and, coming up in October, the Apple Day festival will see 1,000 varieties of British Apples in a unique Borough Market display.
Getting into the Christmas spirit, 1,000 Christmas Kisses will encourage public displays of affection with 1,000 mistletoe berries suspended in the Market Hall, and looking to next summer, Borough Market will stage a range of music and theatre performances that you won’t want to miss.
