SECOND IN THE SERIES: AN URBAN FIT OUT CONCEPT BY PERKINS+WILL
In 2015 The Shard partnered with two international interior design firms Jump Studios and Perkins+Will to create a series of design concepts to inspire people to think differently about how and what work spaces can be.
The progressive design of The Shard goes way beyond its glittering exterior. Every aspect of the building coincides to make life and the work taking place within be the very best it can be. Every element has been carefully considered, from its silhouette against the London skyline to the position of the electrical outlets. The result, an inspiring work environment that unifies, promotes productivity, well-being and creativity.
This series of six concepts is in keeping with The Shard’s multi-sector community which currently comprises 27 office occupiers across 15 sectors. Each of the concepts has been approached in order to appeal to a range of businesses, from fashion and consumer brands, creative, tech and media, to professional services, consulting and finance.
The first of the series 'BOUTIQUE' was developed by Jump Studios, an ambitious collective of architects, designers and makers focused on challenging conventions and redefining boundaries with clients including Google, Nike, M&S, The Engine Group, RedBull, Yahoo!, Saatchi & Saatchi and Bloomberg.
The concept by Jump was for an office design layout inspired by London’s premium boutiques, ideal for companies who wish to convey a sense of prestige and with a desire to recruit only the best and the brightest.
URBAN
Our second in the series concept ‘URBAN’ was curated by Perkins+Will, a global architecture and design firm who are one of the most successful fully integrated practices in the UK and EMEA. They deliver a wide range of professional property services including large-scale urban design and planning developments, new build architecture, corporate interiors, and strategic workplace consultancy. Their clients include News UK, Allen & Overy, Barclays, BskyB, Deloitte Digital, Linklaters, Macquarie Group and Microsoft.
THE URBAN JOURNEY
This concept looks to create a transformational workplace full of features that exemplifies the City’s energy, dynamism, movement and creativity. A fully engaging experience with business innovation and positive disruption at its very core. It aims to project an evolving environment where talent feels empowered and encouraged to collaborate.
DESIGN FEATURES
The ‘urban journey’ is planned in order to generate vibrant areas and civic spaces where creative collisions can take place. The design features aim to kindle these liaisons, and are all inspired by the urban environment and include incorporating features such as exposed ceilings, neon lighting and using re-purposed materials, reclaimed timber and brushed steel.
COLLABORATION
Collaboration in the office is becoming increasingly important in the modern working environment as not only does it equate to a happier workforce, but it represents an educated one. This is because it naturally inspires a sense of community within an organisation, meaning that employees feel almost like they are a part of a family whilst being able to learn from one another. Multipurpose spaces are proven to increase productivity, efficiency and redefine boundaries between companies and ultimately improving everyone’s overall performance and sense of well-being.
